Light trap
A light trap attracts migratory locusts and grasshoppers when they are flying at night. When they see the light, they fly into it and fall into a bucket of soapy water below. Because the water is soapy, the locusts and grasshoppers can’t get out and they die. By putting a light trap in your field, you can learn how many grasshoppers are traveling at night.

Placement
When the light trap has been constructed, bring it to the field. It must be in a location at least 50 meters from trees and roads, but it should not be too difficult to reach.

How to use a light trap
In the evening, go to the field where you put the trap. Bring water with you to fill the basin. Take the basin down, fill it with water, and add a little soap. Put the basin back and turn on the light. That’s it! Go home for the night.
Go back to the field in the morning. Bring a notebook and an identification guide with you. Turn off the light and take down the bucket. Pour out the water over a sieve. There may be a lot of insects in the sieve, but are there any locusts or grasshoppers? Do you know any of the species? You may not be able to identify all of them, but write down how many grasshoppers and locusts you see and what species they are if you do know.
Every three days, you will refill the basin with water and again turn on the light trap. Then you will measure the results the day after tomorrow. Every three days, you will turn on the light and repeat the process of refilling the basin and counting insects.

Comment utiliser un piège lumineux? Le soir, allez au champ où vous avez mis le piège. Apportez avec vous de l’eau pour remplir la bassine. Prenez la bassine et remplissez-la avec de l’eau et ajoutez un peu de savon. Remettez la bassine en place. Allumez la lumière. Et c’est tout! Rentrez chez vous pour la nuit.
Vous reviendrez dans la matinée. Apportez alors un cahier et un guide d’identification des principales espèces de criquets. Éteignez la lumière et retirez la bassine. Versez l’eau sur un tamis. Il peut y avoir beaucoup d’insectes dans le tamis, mais y a-t-il des criquets et connaissez-vous certaines de ces espèces de criquets? Si oui, comptez combien il y a de criquets de chaque espèce.
Vous allez à nouveau allumer le piège lumineux puis effectuer les comptages le lendemain. Tous les 3 jours vous allumerez la lumière du piège et répéterez tout le processus.

What next?
When you are done counting, call your local plant/pest protection organization and tell them how many locusts or grasshoppers you observed. Tell them who you are, where you counted the locusts or grasshoppers, and how many you counted. If you know the type of each grasshopper, tell them how many of each type you observed.
