A social-ecological-technological system (SETS) is a framework for understanding how environmental processes, human societies, and technologies interact as part of an interconnected system. Rather than treating these components separately, a SETS perspective emphasizes how their relationships, feedbacks, and dependencies shape outcomes. This approach is particularly relevant for locust outbreaks, which emerge from dynamic interactions between climate variability, landscape conditions, human values and relationships, monitoring systems, and management interventions.

Systems thinking is therefore essential for understanding locust dynamics because outbreaks cannot be explained, or effectively managed, through any single discipline. Locusts can persist at low densities for long periods, but under favorable environmental conditions, they can rapidly transform into dense, mobile populations that form marching bands and migratory swarms. These events trigger cascading effects across agriculture, food security, economies, and governance systems, illustrating the tightly coupled nature of ecological processes and human responses.

In this context, locusts sit at the center of a mandala-like intersection of disciplines, including natural sciences, social sciences, governance, management and technology, and the arts and humanities. Each contributes essential perspectives, from understanding population ecology and behavior to designing early warning systems, coordinating international responses, and communicating risk to affected communities. A transdisciplinary approach is therefore critical, enabling the integration of diverse forms of knowledge and supporting more adaptive, innovative, and resilient strategies for locust monitoring and control.
