The Melanoplinae, known by the common name the Spur-throated grasshoppers, is the second largest subfamily of the family Acrididae (after Gomphocerinae). They are widely distributed throughout the Holoarctic and Neotropical realms. They the common name is derived from a tubercle or spiny bump on their prosternum (or "throat") between their front pair of legs.
