In the Sahel region, the AGRHYMET Regional Center (ARC) plays a crucial role in providing essential agrometeorological information for effective monitoring of locusts and grasshoppers. ARC was established as part of the Permanent Inter-state Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS) and serves as a regional development system focusing on agriculture and natural resource management. ARC maintains collaborations with various global research organizations, including The French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), financial institutions, and national plant protection organizations (NPPOs). These partnerships involve activities such as funding support, information dissemination, training, research, and oversight, contributing to the overall monitoring efforts.[1]
From 2006 to 2009, the ARC implemented two significant projects focused on locusts and grasshoppers, known as the Locust Control Support Project funded by the USAID West Africa Office, the Crop Protection Directorate of CILSS member countries, and various other partners. Additionally, the PreLISS Project (Regional Programme for Environmentally Sound Grasshopper Control in the Sahel) took place from 2002 to 2010 and received funding from the Danish International Development Agency, the National Environmental Research Institute of Denmark, and other collaborating partners.
