Hojun Song is an entomologist and evolutionary biologist specializing in the systematics, phylogeny, and biogeography of Orthoptera (grasshoppers, katydids, and crickets). He is Professor and Director of ASU Biocollections at Arizona State University and a leading authority on grasshopper evolution. Song’s research integrates morphology, genomics, and comparative methods to resolve evolutionary relationships within Orthoptera, with a particular focus on the diversification of grasshoppers (Caelifera). He has contributed extensively to reconstructing the evolutionary history of major orthopteran lineages and to understanding the origins and repeated evolution of locust swarming behavior. He is widely known for large-scale phylogenetic studies that combine molecular data with fossil and morphological evidence, helping to clarify long-standing taxonomic uncertainties. His work has also explored patterns of dispersal and diversification across continents, providing insight into how ecological and historical factors have shaped present-day species distributions. In addition to his research contributions, Song has been active in training students and advancing systematic entomology, and he collaborates broadly with international researchers working on Orthoptera taxonomy and evolution.
