The International African Migratory Locust Organization (OICMA), established in Mali in 1955, was eventually dissolved in the 1980s due to financial constraints and because environmental changes had greatly reduced the importance of the traditional locust outbreak area in Mali. Within Mali, OICMA conducted key studies on gregarization of Locusta migratoria in the Niger River floodplain, clarifying the movement patterns and population dynamics that drive the shift from solitary to gregarious phases.
