The Palearctic realm is the largest biogeographic realm, spanning Northern Africa, all of Europe, and most of Asia.
It shares both land and maritime borders with the Afrotropical and Indomalayan realms to the south.
Geography
Biogeography
In the Bioregions 2023 framework used by non-governmental organization One Earth, the traditional Palearctic realm is split into five realms: Central Eurasia (Central Palearctic), Eastern Eurasia (East Palearctic), Southern Eurasia (South Palearctic), Subarctic Eurasia (Upper Palearctic), and Western Eurasia (West Palearctic).
Political geography
Iceland, the Faroe Islands (administered by Denmark), and Svalbard and Jan Mayen (administered by Norway) are included in this realm, but do not have any breeding Orthoptera species.
